Understated luxurious interiors meet Balinese tropical vibes at The Bohemian Bali, a soulful retreat located in the boho village of Canggu.
Reflecting the free-spirited creative energy and warmth of its surroundings, this Design Hotels member has been conceived by Markus Hofer, and brought to life by architect Josefina Gruenwald with interior designers Nyree Mckenzie and Fransisca Simon. Blending tradition and contemporaneity, The Bohemian Bali is a sanctuary for guests to disconnect from the bustle of everyday life and reconnect with themselves, nature, and Bali’s rich culture.
With just six rooms, everything is bespoke, from the furniture to the artworks to the bath amenities that stock the luxurious double showers and vanities. Standout accommodations include the single-storey Pool Suite and duplex Pool Loft Suite, both of which feature private outdoor plunge pools and courtyards, plus kitchens and relaxing living and dining areas.
Throughout the property — which feels somewhat like an abandoned warehouse transformed into a blissful Balinese haven — contrasting concepts intertwine in a harmonious fusion; materials such as concrete, steel, and reclaimed wood are paired with high ceilings, large windows, and open-plan spaces, evoking the raw aesthetic of urban lofts, whilst leafy greenery, woven textiles, and traditional Balinese details such as hand-carved doors, intricate stone statues, and thatched alang-alang roofing convey the tranquil essence of the island.
Original artworks feature throughout and include pieces by local creatives (including street-art-inspired artist Quint and silkscreen specialist YOKII) feature prominently throughout the hotel, including in the two rooms and four suites. Each room and communal space is adorned with unique works, ranging from contemporary paintings to traditional Balinese carvings, as well as hand-painted ceramics, artful macramé, and vibrant tapestries that showcase a blend of modern art and cultural heritage.
The hotel employs a holistic sustainability concept and supports the local economy by sourcing furniture and décor as well as organic produce and other ingredients for the kitchen from local artisans, farmers, and vendors. What’s more, many of the staff at The Bohemian are from the surrounding community, ensuring that the hotel’s success directly benefits the people of Bali.
