Nastia Mirzoyan of Mirzoyan Studio transforms a former nightclub into a modern bistro, making a tight budget go a long way through careful restoration and retaining existing features where viable.
Serving Asian cuisine paired with cocktails from a small outpost in Kyiv, Kitsunya is a vibrant spot that blends minimal interiors with Asian references. Open all day, the design adapts to the different hours, avoiding overly decorative elements, instead opting for Asian-style bar seating commonly found in ramen shops, along with standard dining seating in the main space. Versatile, it remains modern and aesthetically clean.
Stainless steel was used throughout, the decision driven by the existing worn textures of the building, with its yellow and sand-coloured bricks showing years of wear and tear. The minimalism and sleekness of stainless steel serves to balance the visual chaos. Plywood was the material of choice for the tables and benches, chosen for its affordability and suitability, whilst in the entrance and bar area, layers of stretched linen fabric — a traditional element in ramen shops — create a welcoming ambience.
With the majority of furniture custom-made, the only purchased items being blue X-Line Chairs that bring bold accent colours to an otherwise neutral palette, Kitsunya has a very distinct feel. Lighting also plays a crucial role, with a purpose to transform the space throughout the day: think bright lighting in the morning that shifts to a warmer, amber glow in the evening. By opting to splurge on the furnishings and retain the existing bar, Mirzoyan has managed to strike a fine balance between modern minimalism and subtle Asian style.
An alluring spot to hang in the Ukraine capital, with Asian influences, great food, impeccable design and a stellar vibe, Kitsunya Kyiv is sure to keep spirits raised.
