From first stepping into the kitchen aged 10, to creating supper club ‘Eureka’ in the family home, Flynn McGarry went on to open his first permanent fine dining restaurant, Gem, in New York City‘s Lower East Side at 19 years old, before going on to open Gem Wine in 2022.
Showing no signs of slowing down, the 25-year-old American chef combines his skills, experiences and passions with the opening of Gem Home, a home goods store with a café and select array of groceries, and which showcases his interests in food, design, and travel; the sleek shop offering an array of contemporary design objects and vintage finds, each sourced by Flynn on his journeys around the world.
Conceived following successfully hosting a series of object sales in New York, Gem Home is his most personal project to date, McGarry commenting that “after years of sourcing décor and ingredients for my restaurants, I finally have a place where I can share my most exciting discoveries on a daily basis. As much as my restaurants have been an outlet for my passion for design, there is a limit to how much I can fit in a space. Gem Home means I can continue curating and sharing incredible, one-of-a-kind pieces with the world.”
Upon entering the store guests can peruse the design objects and select fresh groceries from the deli adjacent. Towards the back of the space, a café provides a daily rotating menu of freshly prepared foods crafted with seasonal ingredients from local farms.
McGarry designed the space — as he did with both Gem and Gem Wine — opting for the laid-back aesthetic of 1970s West Coast interiors. Custom woodwork channels a minimalist, utilitarian aesthetic, featuring red oak tables and shelving throughout, whilst pendant lights from Danish lighting company Louis Poulsen add a warm glow.
For eclectic, vintage and beautiful design objects paired with good honest grub, Gem Home is a drop dead gorgeous outlet that is sure to be another Gem in Flynn McGarry’s expanding empire.
