A much-loved Richmond bakery and coffee shop has undergone a compelling expansion increasing its space to approximately 3,000 square feet by incorporating the adjacent storefront. Sugar & Twine, located in the heart of Richmond‘s Carytown district now exudes thoughtful design crafted by Campfire & Co., seamlessly blending modern touches with warm, natural finishes, making this neighbourhood hangout the perfect spot for lingering over a cup of quality coffee and handmade pastries.
A must-visit destination for coffee and pastry enthusiasts, the venue is home to a snug seating area that accommodates 20 customers, and is characterised by custom millwork, soft lighting, and strategically placed greenery, creating a balance of elegance and comfort. A neutral colour palette with alluring tones ties the old and new spaces together, maintaining a cohesive and intentional design, whilst hand-painted birds by muralist Emily Herr pay homage to the original storefront’s design and add an exceedingly pleasant touch.
The collaboration was executed between Fultz & Singh Architects and general contractor Chopper Dawson, and sets out not only to enhance visitor experience but to allow this beloved gathering spot to serve its community with increased capacity and warmth.
Founded by pastry chef Beth Oristian, fans of Sugar & Twine have flocked here to grab a handmade sweet treat or savoury snack alongside the perfectly balanced seasonal latte for nearly a decade. With newly designed expansion able to accommodate even more locals and travellers on the holy grail for the perfect croissant and creative concoction, the expansion is not only a testament to the power of thoughtful design and community-driven spirit, it’s a fine spot to indulge whilst being indulged.
