Outdoorsy types: Berghaus fleeces, The North Face jackets, chintzy B&Bs and hearty bowls of porridge – it’s a field that’s not necessarily renowned for its design aesthetic. Enter Basecamp, a frightfully good-looking hotel concept that takes the ultra-hip vintage stylings of Ace Hotels, smashes it together with some pioneer-spirit-cool, drips it with a slick minimalist colour palette and serves it all up to adventurers who know better. There’s quirky bits of furniture, wood-panelling and individual artworks from San Francisco-based artist Wendy MacNaughton. This is a very We Heart brand of outdoors.

Offering up a boutique alternative to those exploring the lakes, trails, and mountains of the Lake Tahoe Basin, Basecamp is a 50-room property, but with a distinctly homely feel – there’s a 10-foot reclaimed wood table for its designers to eat “family style” at, and an intimate lobby bar. You get the feeling that a stay here will be as much fun, as it is style-conscious. Offering up something a little unique, in the utterly unique Sierra Nevada, here’s a hotel that has captured the spirit of its locale and delivered something truly special.
