This year’s London Design Festival saw the launch of a rather special new contemporary design space, slap bang in the middle of Soho. A six-storey (make sure you’ve had your Weetabix) Victorian townhouse that’s as lovely as you’ll see – the brick walls and wooden floorboards painted bright white to accentuate the wares on display – and the high-end design within even more so.
Also home to the UK’s first outpost of ESPASSO – the American specialist in Brazilian design occupy two floors – 19 Greek Street has more than its share of South American delights; works by iconic designers like Jorge Zalszupin and Sergio Rodrigues sitting alongside contemporary pieces from architect Isay Weinfeld and former-surfer Carlos Motta – whose reclaimed wood chairs embody the spirit of Brazilian design.
Elsewhere, Nina Tolstrup’s Re-Imagined Chairs – with textiles by David David Design – juxtaposed the white washed space with their bold kaleidoscopic swagger; Breg Hanssen’s delicately pastelled NewspaperWood cabinet was simply a thing of real beauty, whilst experimental pieces in the basement included Werner Aisslinger’s curious Chair Farm. Promising to act as a “hub for craft, excellence and sustainability in design”, 19 Greek Street is one design destination we’re eager to see more of.
