Disconnected from its Richmond, Melbourne community, The National Hotel (not actually a hotel) was a forgotten remnant from another era. That was until Breathe architects came along with a new vision and transformed the venue into a modern social hub.
The building was taken back to the bare bones, before being re-fitted with reclaimed and recycled materials which divide the premises into five zones organised around a bar that stretches the length of the property and serves all five areas. The Opium Den, reflecting the location in the Chinese quarter of Richmond, is a place to relax and absolutely not a place to smoke opium, officers. A courtyard garden, café, dining room and a booth seating area make up the other “provinces”, and throughout the choice of materials is thoughtful. Recycled brick, army tent canvas – you name it, Breathe has used it.
There’s also a strong emphasis on sustainability, with solar power and natural ventilation systems used to minimise power usage, and rainwater is collected on the roof to flush the loos. Here’s hoping there isn’t a drought any time soon…
