What do you get when you mix 30 motors, 300m of electric cable, 14 acoustic guitars and one very clever sound artist? Wonder no more, and press play on the video to find out. Ruben D’Hers, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, but now letting his creative juices flow in Germany, has come up with a very imaginative and utterly hypnotic installation at the Neues Museum Weimar. The fans attached to those 30 motors strum the guitar strings, but their movement as they swing from the web of wire also changes the string being hit to create a constantly shifting wall of sound – one which Ruben likens to the musical sound of the sea.

D’Hers’ aim was to create a sense of the motion of the waves, while helping the listener to lose their sense of time and reach a contemplative state. We think he’s achieved it beautifully. Wake us up in an hour…
