Art traditionalists, restorers and historians might want to take a deep breath, sit down and drink some sugary tea before they take a look at the work of Jordan Wolfson – nothing is sacred or off-limits for his invasion of cartoonish characters that take over whichever scene they enter.
Even the chiaroscuro genius of Caravaggio doesn’t remain unmolested, as under Wolfson’s influence the Italian master’s Boy With a Basket Of Fruit becomes Boy With a Basket of Fruit, a Stoned Elephant and a Ginger Kid. As if it wasn’t bad enough for Isaac, about to be sacrificed by Abraham in another of Caravaggio’s classics, here his face is covered with a heart-filled silver condom. That pesky ginger kid pops up again on a Japanese pornographic illustration, a Wild West cartoon – in fact he’s one of New York native Wolfson’s favourite recurring characters, subverting the images the artists culls from the internet, his own life and popular culture in general.
The boy is always up to something, even lying cheerfully disembowelled in one piece. The collection, Raspberry Poser, features hand drawn illustration, CGI and digital video work, and is on show at Los Angeles’ REDCAT gallery until 27th January, 2013.
