We’re not sure if Richard Woods’ name is a lucky coincidence, an creative inspiration or a mickey-take, and since we’re too polite to ask we’ll just have to keep wondering, but the Chester-born artist does like the look of wood, although a lot of the material in his installations is fake. You probably guessed that from the pictures, didn’t you?
Most of the veneer that Woods coats his spaces in is actually acrylic, and the Alan Cristea Gallery in Cork Street, London, is the latest venue to get the treatment – floor to ceiling in stylised planks that have transformed such unlikely arenas as a church and a Venetian courtyard. Along with the all-over redecoration, Woods has produced some equally fun-poking furniture sculpture, which have some of the real thing as their base material. Called D.I.Y., the exhibition runs until 1st June, but if you do decide to Do It Yourself, we suggest you get permission from the owner of the wall before you clad it in faux decking.
