Anyone who has ever worked freelance will know the challenges that come with it: no one hovering over your shoulder monitoring your internet visitations, all the temptations of unpoliced kitchen cupboards, and the ever-present siren call of daytime TV. Occasionally when things get really bad (imaginary conversations with yourself) it’s time to get out of the house.
Stories, on Broadway Market in London Fields, is the perfect place to go to pretend to work, fostering as it does a “drinking and thinking” philosophy. The younger sister of Shoreditch’s literary watering hole The Book Club, Stories is a meeting place and study by day, event space bar by night, with an all-day brunch menu and a deadline threatening selection of boozy smoothies. Dotted around the place is contemporary art curated by Daydreaming Projects; eternally-gifted Hattie Stewart providing the artwork in our pictures, and she’ll be followed by Chrissie Abbott. The simple wooden furniture with its geometric stools and blocky colours reminded us of Playschool – fitting for a work hard, play hard kind of place – and not an episode of Jeremy Kyle to be seen.
