If you’re of the opinion that things, everything in fact, used to be better in the old days, then you might want to cruise by Zig Zag in St Petersburg for a double shot of nostalgia. The bar and restaurant harks back to a time when the Space Race was yet to be won – or before it became a multi-nationality relay up to the International Space Station anyway. The 1950s and ’60s are back in full swing here. Yeah, baby!
The blue wallpaper flecked with gold and white static looks like it came from the Star Trek effects department, rolled out when crew members are being beamed back aboard the Enterprise. All along one wall is a glass display case full to the brim with period nick nacks, and elsewhere the furniture is happy to show off its curves at every opportunity. Although things seem as retro as you can get, there’s modern technology at work here too, notably in the ceiling sound proofing that ensures the DJs get good acoustics without echo from the smooth and sleek wooden parquet flooring – very groovy. If you’ll excuse us we’re off to watch Austin Powers…
