We love a good old traditional pub, and the American Hotel Echuca certainly fits the bill. Built in 1865, the red brick corner building sporting cream parapets and detailing is a handsome devil which has retained its authentic character in the care of Brandrick Architects and Beatrix Rowe Interior Design. A newer extension at the back had to be knocked down and rebuilt, but the newcomer, although modern, shows off plenty of aged character. The distinctive timber, for example, is redgum which was salvaged from the Echuca wharf regeneration, and helps the contemporary glass structure blend seamlessly with the brick façade. Heavy steel sections from the town’s flour mill have also been given a new lease of life and throughout the mixture of natural and industrial materials is a winner.
Evidence of the enduring character of the hotel is plain for all to see at the bar, where an early 20th Century photograph of the exterior takes pride of place across a whole wall. Polished copper pipes deliver both beer and lighting, and together with some decorative art nouveau glass windows add a bit of upmarket appeal to an otherwise relaxed atmosphere. Head upstairs to the glorious balcony for views of the nearby Murray River.
