The Prince (of Wales) Hotel is a St Kilda favourite, having occupied a place as one of Melbourne’s grandest hotels since it was built the late 19th Century. Designer Megan Hounslow was involved in renovations in the 1990s, and has been back with architect partner Melanie Beynon, known collectively as Meme, to bring the venue bang up to date.
There are 39 individually styled guest rooms, all with different layouts and custom selected artwork for a true boutique feel. Meme’s own innovative creations are highlights – the weaved bedroom wall light fittings are repurposed crayfish pots, and the fruit picker ladders make for attractive towel racks in the bathroom. The public spaces also display fine work. Circa, the hotel’s renowned restaurant, was shortlisted for a Melbourne Design Award, introducing classic design pieces such as Arne Jacobsen/Fritz Hansen egg and swan chairs, restoring some of the period charm to the cocktail bar, and utilising the talents of Utopian Slump‘s Melissa Loughnan to curate the art. Also home to Prince Bandroom (recent visitors having included DJ Shadow and Disclosure) and multi-award-winning Aurora Spa, here’s a prince whose crown jewels are not in short supply…
