In 2012 he took to the streets of San Francisco, in 2013 it was the turn of New York. For artist Brett Amory, 2014 is London’s year, as he unveils a continuation of his Waiting series, Twenty-Four in London, casting a painterly eye on some of the most interesting, if not famous, places within the great city.
Amory took great care selecting his locations; as well as gathering suggestions of where to paint from social media channels, he embarked on an exhaustive, and exhausting, trip around the capital by bicycle, taking in 40 locations, shooting more than 50 hours of video and accruing hundreds of photographs of each place. The Virginian artist is concerned with people as much as place, and his final selections were those at which human life interacted with its surroundings in the most interesting ways. Anyone who’s ever been in a kebab shop at closing time will know that, to borrow from Henry James, “all human life is there”, but in many of Amory’s scenes, the viewer must dig a little deeper to find the full story, as his characters are often obscured by shadow or half turned away. Twenty-Four in London is showing at Lazarides Rathbone, London, until 3 April.
