This art lark seems like a good wheeze doesn’t it? For most of the folks we feature on the pages of We Heart, the journey begins with some natural talent, but after that the road to success in the creative arts is a tricky one to navigate. Luckily, an industry leader has put pen to paper and produced a guidebook of sorts, covering everything from how to shine at college to climbing the professional ladder.
Kate Moross knows her onions; the graphic designer has clients such as Nike, Topshop and Google on her CV and her book Make Your Own Luck offers insights into making it big in a field that is rich with talented hopefuls but less abundantly stocked with quality gigs. The book gives advice on numerous areas including self promotion, collaboration, when to work for free, and the more unpleasant aspects of the business, such as dealing with copycats nicking your ideas. Plain-speaking and entertaining, Make Your Own Luck is a good read and might just stop you becoming the most creative shelf stacker in your local supermarket. The book is out on 17 March, and Moross is involved in some book-related events at Camden’s Cob Gallery between 14 and 24 April.
