Gritty riverside neighbourhood Savamala is one of Belgrade’s emerging creative hotspots, thanks to the influx of galleries, bars and cafés that have flooded the previously neglected area. Mixed bag Mikser House, a centre for Balkans design, has become a symbol of this recent renaissance. Originally a temporary set up to house the Mikser Festival, the team quickly realised the potential of a permanent space. Now, by day, Mikser House is a co-working space, gallery, café and shop. By night, it’s a performance venue, bar and restaurant.
The voluminous proportions of the former warehouse, with its minimalist black and white palette and simple plywood joinery has created a dramatic, light-filled space in which to work, rest and play. Delicious meals alongside excellent coffee, Mikser is a fine pitstop at any time of day or night. Artisanal rakija, honey and condiments from local suppliers, fashion and homewares created by Balkans designers – it’s easier to list the creative practices not on show here. If you’re still about after the sun’s hit the horizon, Mikser lives up to its festival beginnings; discover local bands, DJs and performance artists.
