Developments continue apace to turn the South Korean island of Yeongjongdo into one of Asia’s premier entertainment and leisure destinations. The island itself is a new development – it’s been created by joining together three smaller islands off the coast of Incheon, near Seoul, with reclaimed land. Several leisure complexes have been built or are in the works, with golf courses, casinos, malls and theme parks served by world-class transport links and infrastructure. On the accommodation front, nest hotel is a forward-thinking venue in a prime waterfront location designed in an arresting cubist-modernist style by JOH & Company.
The rooms at nest are piled up on one another, resulting in the remarkable exterior appearance. There’s 370 of those rooms to accommodate guests, with the quirky architecture revealing its true purpose in cleverly offering the best possible views of the surrounding area. Pine tree copses, reed fields and the Yellow Sea are on show through diagonal windows that have been used to allow the maximum amount of daylight into the rooms. The public spaces have received a similar attention to detail too; the KUNST lounge on the lobby level offers a curated collection of books, a coffee bar and a top-of-the-range sound system.
