Generator Paris

Design hostel Goliath, Generator, opens its biggest branch to date in bohemian Paris district...

The Generator design hostel brand has cut the ribbon on its latest branch in Paris, and it’s the largest Generator yet. One of the challenges of visiting Paris on a budget is trying to find somewhere affordable that isn’t too far from the action, and with 916 beds starting at €25 per night for a shared room — and a 10th Arrondissement address (a district which handily includes the Gare du Nord for train-riding backpackers) — Generator Paris is an attractive proposition for the financially-challenged and design-minded alike.

The hostel itself is an attractive proposition too; the lively looks here come courtesy of creative director Anwar Mekhayech and the DesignAgency team. As with all the Generator properties, the design reflects the location, and there are recognisably Parisian motifs throughout the property. Things get off to a high-kicking start with the lobby – home to a colourful and brightly-lit reception desk that screams cabaret. At the other end of the building there’s a rooftop terrace which promises sunset views of Montmartre and the Sacré Coeur. In between there are all sorts of great spaces to spend time, from the mural-festooned cocktail bar to the tiled café and the garden-facing restaurant. The rooms are just as smart, and belie the hostel’s budget credentials with some well-chosen furniture and a fair bit of space for the money.
