When you do most of your main work on aluminium sheeting, you need to be sure everything is properly planned out beforehand, and that’s one way in which Natasha Law uses paper in her practice. In addition to this experimentation and fine-tuning, the London-based artist also produces ink drawings, screen printing and large scale gloss paintings on the medium, and these works are the focus of the exhibition Put it on Paper at London’s Eleven gallery.
Law often creates line drawings straight from her sessions with the models who sit for her, as in a number of this series. She has become known for her female figures in varying states of undress, and in many of the Put it on Paper works the female is discarding a top, face partially obscured or head completely lost beneath the folds of material. Her portraits juxtapose the vulnerability and intimacy of these moments with bold colours, the subject’s body pale by comparison and defined only by faint lines or in silhouette against a dark background. The exhibition continues until 6 September.
