Hauser & Wirth launches spectacular gallery redevelopment in the Somerset countryside...

Hauser & Wirth‘s stunning new gallery, part of an spectacular farm building regeneration in the Somerset countryside near Bruton, has opened to the public this summer after a major restoration project. The gallery is the focal point of the redevelopment – which also offers top-notch restaurant facilities and incredible farmhouse accommodation – and will serve as an exhibition space and a venue for educational programmes involving local schools and artists-in-residence, with a “learning room” that can hold up to 100 people.

Renowned British sculptor Phyllida Barlow has been chosen to get the ball rolling with a collection of new works created especially for the gallery opening in response to its architecture and the surrounding landscape. GIG will occupy the 18th Century threshing barn and surrounding outbuildings, the outdoor areas and one of the two gallery spaces in the arts centre; the collection will be in situ until 2 November. Also nearing completion is a landscaped garden by Piet Oudolf, including a perennial meadow behind the farm buildings, which is scheduled to be finished in September, and a collection of Oudolf’s drawings will be on view until October.
