The Signs Are Everywhere

Myerscough and Morgan unleash their sculptural wordplay at two diverse locations this summer...

Two of We Heart’s favourite colourful characters have been up to their tricks again this summer. When Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan arrive on the scene, people usually find out about it in a hurry thanks to the signature use of highly-coloured signs, flags and other attention-grabbing protuberances that characterise their sculptural installations. Greenwich and Birmingham have enjoyed a dose of M&M magic in the last year or two, and the pair have been especially busy this year with two projects, one in Yorkshire and the other in London, on display at the moment.

Up in Wakefield, the duo has transformed the back garden of The Orangery (an historical Grade II-listed arts and events centre) with their Swing It! installation. The interactive work, commissioned by BEAM, is based on eye-catching motion of signs recalling childhood play, triggered by the movement of visitors sitting on the swing seats and natural wind power. Swing by before 30 September to catch this one in action.

The Southbank Centre is the venue for Myerscough and Morgan’s second summer venture. Commissioned for the venue’s Festival of Love, Temple of Agape represents love of humanity – one of the seven themes of love according to the ancient Greeks. The structure incorporates the Martin Luther King Jr quote “I have decided to stick with love”, and features a series of canopied “love benches” leading to the temple entrance, where visitors can linger or continue up a festive flight of stairs to the next level of the Southbank Centre. The Festival of Love runs until 31 August.
