Chaos Theory

Hong Kong show tries to make sense of the modern world through pop culture history...

We live in a noisy world. Not just the noise of honking horns, screaming sirens and screaming children, but visual noise too. We are bombarded with billboard messages, TV adverts and instructions, signs tell us which way to go. The cacophony can be overwhelming. Somedays Somedaze is a group show that looks to make sense of the sensory overload, collecting the chaos and concerns of modern society and re-framing them with a reassuringly familiar pop-culture style.

The artists involved are Parent’s Parents (a collective of graffiti artists and illustrators and a leather worker from Hong Kong) and Singaporean artist Kristal Melson. The former has put together six collage pieces on six topics; the first looks at Hong Kong’s political climate, the second is interested in the role of media in their society, and the remaining four tackle the universal concerns of religion, death, money and destruction. Melson’s mixed media panels invite us into the heads of pop culture icons by slicing them open to reveal a chaotic jumble of thoughts. The exhibition is being held at the Above Second gallery, Hong Kong, until 4 October.
