You won’t need telling that ‘hygge’ is the Danish word for cosiness, but it goes further than that – when applied to interior design it’s more of a concept that aims to create an intimate and comfortable atmosphere through factors such as choice of materials. Louise Chidgey has 20 years’ experience in the interior design business to draw on, and as one half of the team behind Brassica in Beaminster, Dorset, it was her job to create some “hygge”, while partner Cass Titcombe creates a warm glow with his food.
Louise used attractive fabrics from Swedish designer Jobs Handtryck and lighting from fellow Swedes Örsjö, English furniture by Benchmark and Robert Welch cutlery. Trips to Morocco and Italy yielded some nice discoveries too; Louise managed to find room in her case for basketware, glassware and rugs from the former, and crockery and glasses from the latter. She applied her own finishing touches to some of the textiles, hand dying them to match them perfectly to the restaurant’s palette. With the award-winning Cass looking after the kitchen, Brassica look like establishing itself on Dorset’s foodie trail alongside renowned venues such as River Cottage HQ, The Pig and Hix Oyster and Fish House.
