Provocative art duo Jake and Dinos Chapman have returned to their hometown of Hastings for a new exhibition, bringing with them 200 works including some of their best-known pieces of grotesque weirdness as well as some brand-spanking-new material created especially for the show. In the Realm of the Unmentionable, made possible by a crowd-funding campaign, covers the whole first floor of Jerwood Gallery and is an unmissable event for fans of the terrible twosome.
Among the work debuting at the Hastings event is Sturm und Drang (storm and stress), a a typically gruesome bronze sculpture featuring an imaginatively arranged assortment of maggot-ridden decomposing body parts. Los Caprichos sees the Chapmans rework etchings by the equally disturbed 18th Century artist Francisco Goya, and the Human Rainbow series adds some colour to proceedings, while still maintaining the dark undertones. Their signature work Sum of all Evil has been modified for its appearance at Jerwood, and there is another chance to see the vandalised Victorian portrait series One Day You Will No Longer Be Loved. They must be a real hoot at parties. The Chapmans’ work is in view until 7 January 2015.
