El Huerto de Lucas in Madrid is a food market that takes its commitment to healthy ingredients very seriously indeed — so serious that even the building, from architectural studio More & Co, has been constructed with what we’re told are bio-healthy and toxin-free techniques and materials. I’m not sure I’d go as far as taking a bite out of the place, but it looks pretty darned wholesome all the same.
El Huerto de Lucas (the orchard or market garden of Lucas — that’s Saint Lucas) is in the vibrant Chueca neighbourhood that’s become well-known as a hub for alternative lifestyles. Whether you want to pick up some healthy kitchen supplies for use at home, or have someone do the hard work for you, it’s all on the menu here. At more than 450 sqm there’s plenty of room for a bakery, a fruit and veg section, a butcher’s and a dry-goods shop, as well as a juice bar and coffee shop, space for regular pop-ups, and an organic canteen which uses El Huerto’s produce for eat-in and takeaway options.
