I don’t know if this is even a practical possibility, but if there’s a mechanical engineer out there who can make Simon Shepherd’s skeleton bicycle into a roadworthy reality, I’m buying one. Skeletal Remains is one of the surrealist sculptors new works that forms part of a joint exhibition with painter Janet Brown. The pair have put together a show called The Fuse Is Lit at London’s Black Rat Projects that shares an interest in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Shepherd’s work centres around the fusion of real objects into new and fantastical ones — if not reinventing the wheel, then certainly the bicycle frame, the gun, and the horse chestnut among others. Brown’s work is also grounded in some sort of reality, with scenes that intertwine urban scenes and jungle settings. The artist’s background working in a police CCTV department apparently provides the inspiration for many of the scenarios in which animalistic humans and anthropomorphised animals co-exist within a tense dynamic. The Fuse Is Lit opens today and runs until 10 May.
