Leave your salt and lime, fancy dress sombrero and fake Mexican ‘taches at home and head to Spitalfieds this Saturday and Sunday to souse yourself in the finer points of one of Mexico’s biggest exports. Tequila & Mezcal Fest — celebrating its second birthday — is a one-of-a-kind fiesta, celebrating all things agave and coinciding with Mexico and the UK’s ‘dual year’ … an odd initiative that sees the year of Mexico in Britain met with the flipped equivalent over in Central America.
Respected bartenders will be whipping up a selection of cocktails including everybody’s (read: my) favourite; the Margarita, as well as hosting masterclasses where you can learn to shake and stir your own pet concoctions to perfection. (Are you a Tom Cruise or Bryan Brown?)
Food inevitably continues the theme — with tacos, burritos and more from Wahaca; Café Pacifico; Condesa Latin Tapas; Barrio Bars; Tamal UK; Vera & Co.; and the likes, whilst entertainment and live bands (complete with Mariachi and Folklore dancers) will keep your ‘spirits’ booming.
In a fun twist, the local currency at the festival is the Mexican peso and you’ll be able to exchange your good ole pounds on the day. Tickets are still available; grab yours whilst you can.
