Loosely enveloped in the world of hip hop and electronic music, L.A. polymath Flying Lotus harnesses influences from jazz; prog; psych; drum’n’bass; metal… and, fresh from announcing new group Woke (that sees FlyLo, equally out-there Shabazz Palaces and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Thundercat joined by George Clinton on their debut release), the free-thinking Californian has just released a trailer for a short film in collaboration with director Eddie Alcazar.
“With the ability to travel in time, a lonely girl finds love and comfort by connecting with her past self. Eventually faced with rejection she struggles with her identity and gender, and as time folds onto itself only one of them can remain.” That’s the synopsis that accompanies the breakneck 29 second trailer for FUCKKKYOUUU — the collaboration that appears by no means short of imagination and discomforting visual mindfuckery. Premiering earlier this year at Sundance’s NEXT Fest, FUCKKKYOUUU looks to be on its way to a wider audience. If Flying Lotus’s albums are a whirlwind of ideas, experiments and disorientating flows, steady yourself for their ocular equivalent.
