Shanghai artist/photographer/creative, Maleonn, has a Q&A on his website that deals with clarifying which of those three terms he is most comfortable with. The response: ‘I don’t really care. The title of your interview marked me as a photographer, then I can well be a photographer. That’s not really important.’ This confirms one thing, the man known as Maleonn doesn’t care for pigeonholes — which is a ruddy good job, as one glance through his portfolio will confirm.
Exhibiting as part of Galerie Magda Danysz‘s entry to mega art-photography fair Paris Photo this week, the Shanghai photographer weaves a tangled web of surreal set design; theatrical costume; fanciful narrative and meticulously-crafted photography and post-production. Not photographs. Not artworks. Maleonn’s craft is in the bringing imagination to a physical form, whatever that form may be. Catch his work as part of Galerie Magda Danysz at Paris Photo between 12 – 15 November at the city’s Grand Palais.
