Dominating the Düsseldorf skyline since the 1960s, 94 metre-high Dreischeibenhaus is a listed office block with a place in the hearts of the city’s people; a glistening example of post-war modernist international style. Undergoing a recent renovation, the new-look mixed-use Dreischeibenhaus is home to a plush new restaurant that looks to its early days for inspiration.
Housed on the ground floor, in the skyscraper’s former telephone switchboard, Phoenix (named after Phoenix-Rheinrohr AG, the building’s original construction firm) retains the hues of the 1960s; its entire palette informed by the original petrol blue of the columns that punctuate the entire property. Responsible for the restaurant’s design, and the renovation as a whole, Irina Kromayer and Etienne Descloux pair the mid-century colours with materials and bespoke furnishings that complete the nostalgia trip. Florian Hartmann and Boris Radczun oversee what turns up on your table, with a focus on seasonality honest ingredients and ‘proper’ food: fjord trout, braised ox cheek, truffled polenta, small plates for the pre-theatre crowd.
