Walthamstow Central Parade

Start-up bakery and café feed the creativity at Walthamstow cultural enterprise in converted '60s offices...

Gort Scott Architects have completed another interesting project; this time in London’s E17, transforming a gloriously-retro former 1960s office building into a multidisciplinary space for the Walthamstow creative community; retaining much of its original charm.

Walthamstow Central Parade Co-Working Creative Enterprise

Walthamstow Central Parade gives local businesses the space to collaborate and inspire in a mixed-use hub spread over 650 m2, with ample space for events and workshops along the co-working stations. An independent start-up bakery and café, which is also open to the public, will keep bellies satisfied in the creatively-flourishing neighbourhood.

Having secured funding from the GLA, the London Borough of Waltham Forest brought Gort Scott onboard to upgrade and enhance the character of the existing building, director Jay Gort commenting: ‘we stripped back the linings of the outdated council one stop shop — the lowered ceilings, carpets, partitioned desks etc. — to create a generous, robust hall-like space. We also developed a range of bespoke furniture for the project, delivering everything on a tight budget.’

Working alongside graphic designers Polimekanos to create a crips visual identity, inspiration was taken from the original decorative façade tiles. A growing hotspot for culture and creativity, let’s hope the success of this project can inspire similar projects in the borough. (Alright, alright. Everything’s gonna be alright.)
