David Muñoz — the flamboyant chef behind Madrid’s only three Michelin-starred restaurant DiverXO and its diffusion eatery StreetXO — has brought his confrontational cuisine to unsuspecting Mayfair. Located on Old Burlington Street, StreetXO (like its Madrileño sibling) offers a menu that draws inspiration from European, Asian and South American cuisines; each with Muñoz’s unique twist.
‘It is quite aggressive in the idea, the concept and the flavours,’ Muñoz — who spent five years of his early twenties working in London restaurants like Nobu and Hakkasan — explains of his acclaimed Madrid restaurant in an interview with Bloomberg. ‘It’s explosions in the mouth. I want it to be one gunshot after another when people come into the restaurant. I am absolutely intense in everything I do.’
Renowned for his challenging approach — unexpected takes on familiar dishes, refined and intricate with bold and gutsy flavours, all set against the backdrop of a street food kitchen — diners at StreetXO London can expect to have their tastebuds toyed with by sharing plates like Pekinese dumpling and crunchy pig’s ear; smoked razor clams and kimchi croquetas; tuna steak and burnt butter.
A palette of stained-wood, deep red marble and concrete provides an atmospheric interior; with the addition of salvaged fixtures from a container ship, artworks and brash neon lighting. Be prepared.
