The last pub we were lusting over was Copenhagen’s Mikkeller Bar, back in June, and judging by this watering hole in Bucharest’s old town; it looks like we’ve got ‘a type’. Constructed by designer Corvin Cristian, with the help of architect Serban Rosca, from industrial relics, artworks, furniture and other various salvaged bits and bobs from the ’50s to the ’70s, Atelier Mecanic is somewhat of an antidote to both globalisation (the former tenant was a faceless Irish pub) and Romanian’s unease with their communist past.

With 50 years of industrialisation being quickly swept away, thanks to the local’s desire to erase their past, the sort of period mechanical equipment and industrial paraphernalia showcased at Atelier Mecanic are usually the stuff of scrapyards. Not here. Cristian’s unique vision and hankering to provoke a reaction has give rise to one of the most unique bars we’ve featured; certainly the sort of place where we’d like to down tools come Friday afternoon…
