Much like any country, America’s construction materials are fairly homogenised; light switches look the same wherever you are and builders, electricians or construction workers – especially those on a budget – rarely think outside the box in terms of fixtures. If you’re a commercial electrician in Hove, an amateur sparky in Barcelona, or a top firm in California, there’s a sense of same same. Whether he’s celebrating or deriding this fact, Seattle-based designer Peter Bristol has created a wry homage to the standard American light switch and plug socket with his American Standards Lamp. A surprisingly elegant table lamp is the outcome of Bristol’s commentary on electrical standardisation. Here’s hoping he bags and manufacturer as we think this design object would look just as good over on this side of the pond…
