A hotel that fuses creativity and community, CIVILIAN NYC, located in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen district, is a melting pot of arts, music, and theatre, with guest rooms evoking vintage dressing rooms and public spaces that nod to the property’s positioning on the edge of the Theater District.
Designed by architect David Rockwell of the Rockwell Group, the bold new hotel concept occupies 27 stories and offers 203 guestrooms, a restaurant, secret garden, guest lounge, library, and rooftop bar with epic views of the city. For its aesthetic, Rockwell Group has paid homage to the look and feel of classic theatres with marquee-inspired lighting, theatric curtains, and transformative set and stage-like features.
The intimate but well-appointed guest rooms are kitted out with sumptuous fabrics, curated artwork and amenities, and the custom app which enables guests to ‘stage-direct’ their stay by adding elevated amenities such as room type to WiFi speed and in-room food and beverage.
Bringing a modern approach to the American bistro, the ground-floor restaurant starts with a breakfast service and ends with dinner. With a focus on local farms and producers, the menu will feature seasonal specialities and rotating selections highlighting innovative tweaks on classic dishes. A modern interpretation of a classic Theater District diner, interiors include a curved, ribbed leather ceiling with mirror panels, red leather banquettes, and brass accents, and round custom sconces engraved with theatre façade sketches by set designers, such as Tony Walton, Clint Ramos, Anna Louizos, and Mimi Lien.
The Main Bar and Lounge serve craft cocktails, and the intimate library can be found on the second floor, the former a place for ‘civilians’ to mingle; the latter is a stunning space for those looking to reflect more than connect. The place to see and be seen though is the Rooftop Bar perched high on the 27th Floor, which will open this year and feature small plates accompanied by seasonal cocktails in a space inspired by “the whimsical rooftop gardens of historic Broadway theatres where summer shows were held.”
Launched by Jason Pomeranc, founder of the SIXTY Collective in collaboration with a myriad of other creative hospitality minds, CIVILIAN New York is a hotel that transcends the bounds of traditional hospitality and offers surprises at every turn.
