Having worked in some of the best kitchens across the world including three Michelin-starred Alinea, and Thomas Keller’s ‘New American’ restaurant, Per Se, Greg Baxtrom has become a serial restauranteur as chef-owner of acclaimed Prospect Heights staples Olmsted and Patti Ann’s, as well as Five Acres over in the Rockefeller Center.
His latest New York outpost is called Petite Patate, and it takes him back to Brooklyn; the French neighbourhood-inspired bistro named after his hound, Spud, and offering a creative take on classic dishes whilst using ingredients from local farmers and purveyors. Housed within the former Maison Yaki space, the 48-seat dining room features wicker bistro chairs, vintage Art Nouveau posters and French cookbooks, as well as Maison Yaki’s beloved ‘Oui Chef’ sign, which hangs by the front door. Front facing windows look out onto Vanderbilt Avenue and will open in the warmer months, whilst the heated backyard patio and bar is open year-round and is a fun spot to hangout with its petanque courts and snug seating.
From hor d’oeuvres and appetisers such as Buttery Garlic Escargot; Soft Fried Eggs Frisée Salad; and French Onion Soup, to entrées including Mussels a la Bouillabaisse; Duck Confit Pasta Coq au Vin, and Steak Frites with a warm bone marrow sauce … the menu channels the French bistro classics your mind would instantly conjure, with a heavy dose of Baxtrom’s flair. A curated list of cocktails and a wine bottle list made up exclusively of French wines complement the comforting cuisine at this Prospect Heights bistro.
From the arched royal blue storefront with a pinstriped awning and café curtains, to the dishes that await inside, in Petite Patate, Gregg adds another sure-fire winner to the much-loved neighbourhood restaurants he already owns on Vanderbilt Avenue.
