London chophouse Blacklock will open its next (and biggest) restaurant this month, Blacklock Canary Wharf situated in a standalone warehouse underneath the train tracks of the North Dock, next to the waterside.
Designed by interior design studio, Other Side, the 4,000 square foot space was inspired by the speakeasy bars and restaurants found under New York bridges, the echo of the trains above complementing the energy of the restaurant and design details such as crittall-style windows, a palette of raw metals and exposed concrete finishes.
Retaining the building’s original character with cement-coloured floors, dark concrete ceilings and stripped-back rendered walls, the interiors are quintessentially ‘Blacklock’, through the use of glossy, deep colours, timber panelling and reclaimed furniture, the chophouse chain’s founder Gordon Ker reveals: “We’ve loved working with Other Side to bring Blacklock to Canary Wharf and to transform a unique disused warehouse under the tracks into a restaurant that feels like it’s been there forever and instantly feels like home.”
The waterside location inspired the branding by & Smith, where subtle maritime design references can be found in reclaimed joinery, mirrors and teak panels from the HMS Ark Royal. Vintage nautical and industrial lights add a warm glow whilst blue tones in the upholstered seating, tiles and paint finishes further connect the space to its situation.
A ten-metre-long bar with vintage leather panels and shaped iroko top is a focal point of the space and the back bar, clad in bronze mirrors with timber shelves and filled with bottles, it creates an equally impressive back-drop that shoots light and reflections throughout the space.
Serving reliable and honest hunks of meat that diners choose from Blacklock’s signature chalkboard, Blacklock ‘under the bridge’ is an embodiment of cosiness that evokes nostalgia and offers a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
