Following huge success with Perilla over in Newington Green, Ben Marks and Matthew Emmerson have literally just swung open the doors on Morchella, their new venture situated just off Exmouth Market.

Housed in a former bank, the restaurant looks set to be a laidback affair serving up a modern interpretation of classical dishes with executive chef Ben, and Matthew, who’ll lead front of house team, joined by Great British Menu finalist and head chef, Daniel Fletcher. Of the opening, Marks explains: “We are absolutely thrilled to be opening in Clerkenwell, we feel we’ve found a beautiful site and put together a really talented and experienced team,” with Emmerson adding: “We hope Morchella will be an extension of the vibrant community we’ve built at Perilla. We’re bringing that same neighbourhood warmth to Exmouth Market, with exceptional food, great wines and a talented team.”

Honouring a commitment to preserving the building’s original features, the space features a minimalistic and stripped-back design with lush greenery, raw plaster and stripped original wooden panelling that creates a warm and welcoming ambience. With seating for 68, diners enter through curved wood doors carefully restored with their original features.

The ground floor dining room is home to an open kitchen to encourage connection between chefs and guests while offering the latter the opportunity to see the former at work. Just off the dining room, Morchella’s snug wine bar presents the perfect opportunity to enjoy a small bite or after-work glass of wine. Downstairs in the basement lies a private dining room for 14, whilst in the warmer months, a 24 seater outdoor dining terrace will overlook the hustle and bustle of Exmouth Market.

With a menu that emphasises the use of seasonal produce, sourced from both artisanal Mediterranean suppliers and small independent British day boats and farmers, diners can expect dishes such as salt cod churros; scallop with cauliflower mushroom; hake with sobrasada; and salt baked poussin with chilli sauce … all to be washed down with wines from Newcomers, Emile Wines, Basket Press Wines and Dynamic Vines to name but a few.

An informal spot to enjoy sharing plates with fine wine and good times in exceedingly handsome surrounds, Morchella promises to expand on the talented duo’s impression on the London dining scene.
