With a name references the time of year when the Sears catalogue would drop on doorsteps across the USA, bringing joy to all who would begin excitedly circling items to hopefully arrive for Christmas, ‘Late August’ is a culinary project from chef Chris Williams in collaboration with Lucille’s Hospitality Group.
Located in Houston’s innovative Ion District, in the previous Historic Downtown Sears building, the restaurant aims to bring that same wonderment to guests through its atmosphere, service, and cuisine, which echoes the mission of Lucille’s Hospitality Group: “Serving the Past, Feeding the Future.” The new Ion District restaurant will, as such, serve up dishes that blend culture and flavour to excite the soul and create lasting experiences.
Designed by Gin Design Group, the restaurant’s design takes inspiration from the iconic Sears department store and features original Sears terrazzo tile flooring with vivid jewel tones of teal, burnt orange and salmon. With space for 70 covers, the restaurant boasts curvaceous Deco architecture, including handmade metallic-accented wallpaper, a custom marble bar with contrasting inlaid marble, mirrored tiles, sculptural metallic mirrors, an intimate private dining room, and artwork projecting the Late August story overlooking the dining space by Houston Artist and Hogan Brown Gallery Curator, Robert Hodge.
The design not only inspires the menu, it curates the entire experience with the food, wines, textures, and ambiance from the moment diners enter the door; creating a cultural, culinary celebration of past, present and future.
Bringing about all the same excitement that kids of the United States once felt picking out those Christmas gifts of their dreams, Late August is open now at 4201 Main St, Suite 120, Houston, TX 77002.
