Rockwell Group look to the concept of 'slow design' for their subtle but sumptuous update for Mallorca hotel, Posada Terra Santa...

From Nobu Barcelona to The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai, New York fried chicken cathedral COQODAQ to the 1 Hotel Toronto, New York-, Madrid- and Los Angeles-based design studio Rockwell Group have a considered knack for conjuring interiors that are singular to the essence of each project whilst maintaining a common sense of quiet luxury. At Palma de Mallorca luxury hotel, Posada Terra Santa, the team have once again fashioned a project that has guest experience at its core.

Commissioned by founders Ignacio Jiménez and Carmen Cordón in 2023 to breathe fresh life into their 26-bedroom hotel, the designers have practiced ‘slow design’ to protect Posada Terra Santa’s sense of place and individuality; the more sustainable approach to luxury meaning that the interiors preserve their connection to the surrounding tradition, culture, and context of this beautiful historic corner of the Mallorcan capital.

Featuring a deer, the building’s traditional coat of arms has been referenced throughout, and furniture, fixtures and materials have been upgraded alongside minimal architectural interventions; Rockwell seeking to avoid distractions from the original beauty of this historic space, which dates back to 1576. Inspiration has been taken throughout from local craftsmanship and art of the Balearic Islands, as the designers looked to the notion of ‘layers’ throughout the project; history, experiences and discovery a part of the guests’ journey from the gothic arches of its entrance to the reimagined rooftop informed by traditional ikat weaving, Mallorca Llegües.

A neutral colour palette throughout the entrance allows the sumptuousness of the materials to shine, natural stone and raw wood setting the tone for the luxuriousness that continues as the layers of Posada Terra Santa unfold. Woven textures, ceramic tabletops and rough, unglazed terracotta bring more colour and texture to the restaurant, whilst bright blue bar lamps in the bar area nod to traditional local fabrics. A woven upholstered tapestry screen frames the headboards which are a centrepiece of the guest rooms, where bold and saturated colours mark the final destination of the guests’ journey throughout the hotel’s spaces.

A fixture of Palma’s boutique hotel scene since its opening in 2014, Jiménez and Cordón’s Posada Terra Santa is delicately transformed for a new future that is deeply rooted in its past. Thoughtfully composed, with experience and discovery ingrained in its new aesthetic, Rockwell Group’s subtle update is a lesson in their concepts of slow design and post-luxury.
